TALMA: A TEACHING FELLOWSHIP

THE TALMA CO-TEACHING MODEL IN ACTION:

TALMA as a Teaching Fellowship:

TALMA places Fellows in low-income schools in the Israeli periphery as an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to the movement for education equity. At the same time, the new teaching environment challenges Fellows to step outside their comfort zones and develop their craft as they overcome language & culture barriers and work in partnership with an Israeli co-teacher who offers a different perspective and alternative techniques.

Fellows are in their placement schools from 8:00 am until 1:30pm before heading to Professional Development.

TALMA AS THE ENGLISH IMMERSION PROGRAM:

TALMA, the Israel Program for Excellence in English, is a three-week English-immersion program for Israeli elementary schoolchildren. Operating Sunday through Thursday from 08:00-13:00 for three weeks in July, TALMA offers experiential and substantial learning through a combination of frontal instruction, staff-led workshops, and third-party workshops.

TALMA provides a meaningful opportunity for schoolchildren who often have no worthwhile and affordable educational or social options during the two-month summer vacation. Students learn with their regular classmates from the previous school year – including children from a range of socio-economic backgrounds – which help creates a positive and natural classroom experience.

TALMA uniquely brings together American and Israeli teachers who work in an effective team-teaching format, with each class taught by one American teacher and one Israeli teacher. Leveraging the best practices of US English-language instruction, TALMA teachers engage their students in a fun, caring and productive way. While this teaching model already has proven effective, TALMA is committed to ongoing improvement in order to make the teacher-student experience even better.

TALMA’s teachers are highly motivated. The US-based teachers, all of whom have been to Israel previously, volunteer their time to make a real difference. Israeli teachers, who come from all over the country, are interested in contributing to improved education in Israel’s periphery. Whether American or Israeli, TALMA teachers are dedicated educators who serve as strong role models for participating schoolchildren.
