Tikkun Olam Angola

Co-teaching English in Angola, building confidence and cross-cultural connections.

This summer marked the third year of TALMA’s Tikkun Olam program, a powerful collaboration between TALMA Israel alumni and local Angolan educators in Luanda, Angola. In partnership with the Israeli Menomadin Foundation and Angola-based Fundação Arte e Cultura (Arts and Culture Foundation), four TALMA alumni spent a month co-teaching English, blending their expertise with the knowledge and cultural insights of local Angolan teachers. Together, they created an engaging, experiential learning environment that fostered deep connections and mutual growth.

This partnership not only enhanced English instruction but also strengthened leadership, adaptability, and teamwork among educators. An impressive 92% of students reported increased confidence in speaking and understanding English, and 96% wanted to participate again next year, a testament to the program’s impact. The enthusiastic response from the community ensures its continuation, with plans already in motion to build on this meaningful foundation next summer.

My teaching experience in Angola was truly life-changing as it challenged me to grow personally and professionally. It significantly enhanced my leadership skills and allowed me to build strong, lasting professional relationships across diverse cultures. Teaching in Angola as an African American woman was a deeply enriching experience, where I was able to make profound cultural connections that were rooted in shared customs and practices. I really felt like I was with family- creative, welcoming, and familiar. Teaching in Angola made me feel valued as an educator, which inspired me to give my absolute best to every student who entered my classroom. The experience reignited my passion for teaching the English language and reminded me of the transformative power of education.
